Benni McCarthy has begun his tenure as Kenya’s head coach, aiming to leverage his elite-level experience from Manchester United to revive the Harambee Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualification hopes. The South African legend, appointed on a two-year deal, faces immediate tests with World Cup qualifiers against Gambia (March 22) and Gabon (March 26).

McCarthy’s most recent role as Manchester United’s attacking coach (2022–2024) under Erik ten Hag saw him refine forwards like Marcus Rashford, who netted 30 goals in the 2022/23 season. His emphasis on direct, transition-based football—prioritising rapid attacks over prolonged possession—could benefit Kenya’s pacey wingers and strikers. At United, he contributed to two domestic cup wins, instilling a professionalism he now seeks to replicate in Nairobi.

Kenya currently sits fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, five points behind leaders Ivory Coast. McCarthy’s preference for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3 formation may address the team’s struggles in converting chances, with his system relying on intelligent decision-making from attackers during counters. His focus on player development—evident in Rashford’s career-best form—could maximise the potential of forwards like Michael Olunga.

The Harambee Stars’ matches are critical to reviving their qualification bid. McCarthy’s first squad selection will reveal whether he leans on experienced players or integrates younger talents. His backroom staff—assistant Vasili Manoussakis and goalkeeping coach Moeneeb Josephs—bring familiarity, having worked with him previously.

Kenya’s football federation has faced instability, including a 2022 FIFA suspension, but McCarthy praised the current leadership’s transparency as a key factor in his decision to accept the role. While World Cup qualification remains ambitious, his blend of European pedigree and African football understanding positions him to stabilise the team ahead of co-hosting the 2027 AFCON.

McCarthy’s success hinges on translating his attacking philosophy to a squad lacking consistent goal threats. If implemented effectively, his high-tempo approach could disrupt group rivals Gambia and Gabon this month, offering Kenya a path to climb the standings.
