Serie A 2024/25: Matchday 7 Recap & Highlights

Last Updated on

In Matchday 7 of the 2024/25 Serie A season, Napoli secured their fifth victory by defeating Como 3-1, maintaining their strong form. This result keeps them two points clear of Inter Milan, who also managed to edge out Torino in a close contest to retain their second place on the leaderboard. AC Milan’s loss to Fiorentina on Sunday dropped them to 6th position with 11 points.

Inter Milan Achieves Tight 3-2 Victory Against Torino

The previous season’s champions, Inter Milan, managed to fend off Torino in a closely contested match at home on Saturday, cementing their spot in second place in the Serie A standings.

An early red card for Torino defender Guillermo Maripan gave Inter a significant advantage, allowing them to play with an extra man for most of the game. Marcus Thuram was the star of the match, netting a hat-trick, including the decisive goal in the second half.

Inter’s first goal came in the 25th minute when Thuram headed in a close-range ball, mere minutes after Maripan’s dismissal. Ten minutes later, Thuram scored again with another header, giving Inter a comfortable lead.

However, Torino quickly responded, with Duvan Zapata capitalizing on a defensive lapse to score from inside the box just a minute later.

Thuram secured his hat-trick in the second half, being in the right spot to slot in a rebound from Torino’s goalkeeper, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Torino kept pushing, and Nikola Vlasic converted a penalty four minutes before full time, awarded after Hakan Calhanoglu fouled Adam Masina in the box.

Despite their efforts for an equalizer, Torino’s disadvantage of being a man down was too great, and they ultimately succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to Inter.

Both teams are set to resume their campaigns on Matchday 8 in a fortnight, with Inter facing Roma and Torino going up against Cagliari.

Milan Drops to Sixth Following 2-1 Defeat by Fiorentina

Outstanding performance by Fiorentina’s goalkeeper David de Gea, who saved two penalty kicks, secured a 2-1 triumph over AC Milan on Sunday evening. This victory elevates Fiorentina to the 11th position, while Milan slips to 6th after being tied for second the previous week.

Fiorentina opened the scoring at the 35-minute mark as Adli netted a low shot from the edge of the area, beating Milan keeper Mike Maignan.

Just before halftime, Milan had a prime opportunity to equalize with a penalty awarded to Tijjani Reijnders, who was fouled by defender Luca Ranieri. However, De Gea rose to the occasion, denying Hernandez from 12 yards out.

Milan managed to get on the scoreboard in the second half when Pulisic volleyed in a cross from Hernandez. This marked the 26-year-old’s fifth goal of the season.

However, Fiorentina regained their lead just 17 minutes later when Gudmundsson unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area. Despite a few more close chances, Fiorentina held on to earn a significant 2-1 victory over the heavily favored Milan.
