Barcelona secured the championship title on Thursday evening after an away victory against Espanyol. The club has enjoyed an exceptionally successful season, having claimed three trophies and showcasing dominance in domestic competitions. Although the Champions League campaign did not bring the desired results, the season is widely regarded as a triumph, largely thanks to Hansi Flick’s skillful management, which quickly brought the team back on track.

An important contributor to this success was Wojciech Szczęsny, who managed to secure the starting goalkeeper position after competing with Inaki Peña. Szczęsny began his tenure with an impressive unbeaten streak, consistently making crucial saves and preventing the loss of points for Blaugrana. Recognising his vital role, the club swiftly initiated contract extension discussions to secure his services for the next season.

While an extension offer is already on the table, Szczęsny has yet to make his decision. Following the Espanyol match, he addressed the situation, confirming Barcelona’s keen interest in retaining him but emphasising that he now has time to carefully consider his options. It’s possible that Hansi Flick may choose Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the team’s final two league matches of the season.

– Now is the right time to discuss matters with the club. They’ve expressed their desire for me to stay. I wanted to wait until the season concluded to make my decision. I hope I won’t play in the remaining games, so I’ll have the chance to focus on this matter – the Polish goalkeeper explained in an interview with Eleven Sports.

Should Szczęsny eventually depart, Barcelona will secure a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window.
